The Great Comet of 1881

The Great Comet of 1881

$95.00

The comet appeared in June 1881 and stayed visible to the naked eye for weeks. Trouvelot drew it in pastel at the telescope at Harvard College Observatory, working at a time when photographic plates could not yet record faint detail in the night sky. What astronomers knew of comets came down to what a trained observer could see and put on paper. Published as a chromolithograph in 1882, one of a set of fifteen plates.

Pairs well with

Printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, a 308 gsm matte paper made from 100% cotton. It is acid free and lignin free, which is what stops a print from yellowing as it ages.

The ink is pigment, laid down by a Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-4600. Pigment holds its colour far longer than dye inks.

Every print is produced to order in our Toronto studio, trimmed and inspected before it is packed. Nothing is outsourced.

Measurements are the full sheet, including the white border. Every size we offer is a standard frame size. Listed sizes depend on the artwork's orientation.

The image is centred inside the sheet. Border width differs between the long and short edges because each work keeps its own proportions.

Made to order. 1 to 3 business days for production before your print ships. Sent by Canada Post with tracking, rolled in acid-free tissue inside a rigid kraft tube with end caps. Tracked shipping is $12 anywhere in Canada, or free on orders of $150 or more.

You have 30 days from delivery to return a print. If it arrives damaged or faulty, email us with photos and we will reprint and reship at no cost to you.
